SEPTEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER

With the founder of FMA, Oscar Jesus Cortes, returning to the US August this was the first month without him. A big thank you to Oscar for all the work that he put in during his years with FMA. The departure of Oscar inevitably meant some changes to the school, but fortunately we had plenty of volunteers during September so the transition for the children was made easier. The children continue to be enthusiastic and very welcoming to new volunteers. If you come to volunteer with us, don’t be surprised if they are jumping all over you on your first day!

At the beginning of this month we had a graffiti artist come in called Christian Peterson that Rachel, one of our volunteers, had met in Bogota. He did a stencil workshop with the kids: showing them how to create stencils and use spray paint. When we do activities with paint some of the kids end up with more paint on them than where it’s meant to be, but they really enjoy using it! The results of the stencils and spray paint are now on the outside wall of the school in Fundadores. Thank you Christian for coming along! We also had a dentist come along to teach the children the importance of brushing their teeth and dental hygiene. She kindly gave the children toothbrushes as well. As a follow up to this we did classes about food groups and healthy eating.
